In the 20th century, the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo (17.8 million inhabitants on an area of 1.509 km2) was characterized by intense industrialization. After the shutdown of most of the manufacturing facilities it was realized that due to missing precaution in the handling of dangerous substances a lot of contaminated sites were generated within the city limits. A lot of the contaminated industrial sites, already surrounded by housing construction for a long time, are therefore mostly unused and demand a solution in urban design. One of them is the project of urban area rehabilitation “Diagonal Sul” on an area of about 2.000 hectares. In this project, in the context of the implementation of a new land use plan and a new construction plan, many important brownfields should be rehabilitated and reused in a new way. In the context of INTEGRATION, a representative part of this area, characterized by a lot of brownfields, should be examined and evaluated. It is planned to use this area for the construction of living quarters for people from different social structures, with the explicit aim to reintegrate parts of this population into the economy.
